Preparing for a Web Design project

So you are ready to build a new website and you are looking for a web designer. Maybe you have never done this before and the task seems a little daunting. We at Inventive Web Design have walked many customers through the process and would like to give you so tips on what you should have ready to give your web designer on your initial meeting or phone call.

Demographic

Of course you should think about your demographic. Who is your ideal client? Are they male, female, or both? What age group? Where do they live? What magazines do they like to read? What products do they buy? How much money do they make. The list goes on and on but we basically want to know who we need to target the website towards.

Purpose

Have a clearly defined idea of what you want your website to do. Do you just want to supply information about your company online? Are you trying to sell a product via eCommerce? If so, have you checked out your competitors and how they are selling (amazon, ebay, etsy, etc.)? Are you planning events or do you want a membership site? All of these items can affect to the cost of your website so write down what the main areas for your website that you need right away and if there is anything that can be done in phase 2 of the web design process.

Design

Have you looked for websites that you like? Do you have an existing website that you want to improve? It is good for your web designer to know exactly what your vision is. We can create fantastic websites with very little input but we find that the more specific the customer is on what they like and dislike the happier they are with the final product. Check out your competitors websites and see what you love and hate about them. Decide the simpler things like if you want a darker or lighter website and what colors you want to use.

Website Sitemap

Sitemap

What pages do you want on the website. Starting here makes everything else fall in line. We don’t need the content right at the start but it helps us build out our web design bid if you know approximately how many pages you want on your site. You can do a simple outline like this:

  1. Home
  2. About Us
    1. Our Team
    2. Our Mission
  3. News/Blog
  4. Portfolio
  5. Products
    1. Product Category 1
    2. Product Category 2
  6. Contact

When thinking about your sitemap remember that the simpler the top level navigation is the better. If you have five or six navigation items (like the above outline) it is just fine. If you can have less than that, even better. If you have more we suggest making broader categories and then sticking the pages in a sub menu.

These are just the basics. Inventive Web Design can help you get through each step of the design process but with more information about what you want we can make you even happier with your final web design product. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions or would like a free estimate.
